Unfortunately, like too many mainstream feminist films, mostly cishet white women benefit and other marginalized groups did not get very progressive representation. Other feminists have noted the feminist qualities of Legally Blonde, but I think many people fail to see how groundbreaking, in terms of its representation of women, the film was. ![]() ![]() Instead, they encountered a woman-positive, feel-good film that subverted the dumb blonde stereotype, trashed misogynists, uplifted its heroine and undermined sexist tropes. ![]() Upon its release in 2001, the film’s title and packaging likely fooled many potential viewers into thinking they were in for a feature-length dumb blonde* joke and yet another chance to laugh at a misogynist caricature. Legally Blonde is essentially a bait and switch.
